THE JAZZ POLICE

The Jazz Police
BACK TO LISTING

The Jazz Police play a unique blend of those romantic and vibrant swing tunes from the thirties, forties and fifties, as well as some contemporary tunes of today.

With two part harmony singing and lustrous songs from writers such as Gershwin, Berlin and Porter, they offer music which would compliment any social gathering such as dinner functions and parties, public or private.

The Jazz Police offer exciting, up tempo tunes from Django to Nat King Cole with slapping double bass and smooth guitar that will get any foot tapping.

So, why the name THE JAZZ POLICE, we hear you cry. Well, we are not in any way connected to the constabulary; the name comes from a musical joke amongst musicians, that is if you play something cheesy or wrong, the jazz police will be called at your peril, a bit like the fashion police, but we won't go there, eh.

We started The Jazz Police because we love this sort of music and it was a way that we could be a little self indulgent, but still share the results with you, the audience; so the music we play does come from the heart, we're not out to win awards or get slaps on the back, we just want you to enjoy the music we love.

Jarrod Coombes
I started singing at the age of eight in the school choir, which I did till the age of twelve. I was always interested in rock n roll since I used to hear early Elvis on the way to the seaside on family holidays as a kid. I was kicked out of music at secondary school after two years, so no musical training was obtained.

Having some older friends, I was fortunate enough to go to London on a regular basis to small clubs and hear obscure rock n roll which caught my imagination. After seeing someone playing the double bass, that was the ultimate challenge, an instrument bigger than me: that was it.

I found out that the school had a double bass from the defunct school band. I managed to persuade the teacher to let me clean it up and borrow it at weekends. Many hours and blisters later I was on the road of no return, destined to play music forever.

After I was given a cassette with Oscar Peterson and another with Django Reinhardt, I was definitely hooked on swinging jazz.
At the age of sixteen I met guitarist Jim and teamed up with Jim's cousin to form the Rocking Trio. A year later, with some live experience, we then became The Keytones, which ran for about nine years. I then joined Ronnie Scott's Rejects, a jazzier outfit, for six years and the two groups sort of joined into Hullabaloo.

I have been lucky enough to play with various bands and recording projects such as a personally commissioned video for Sir Paul McCartney, have played double bass on Morcheeba's first album and for the TV show "They Think Its All Over". ?More recent projects have included a commission to produce music for film director Ken Russell. No matter what the gig is, small, large or ignored, I will always love to sing, play and entertain.

Jim Knowler
Ever since I can remember music has been a key part of my life, from the family parties to hours spent in my bedroom listening to records.

At about the age of thirteen I was taught to play the harmonica by my uncle and this inspired me to learn more about music. After teaching myself to play the ukulele, I decided that another instrument might have more street cred, so after seeing my cousin Andy play guitar, decided that was the instrument for me.

Heavily influenced by my cousin I listened to Eddie Cochran, Scotty Moore and Cliff Gallup (to name but a few), spending hours in my room trying to decipher the solos and chords. It was a slow process but after a year I was ready to play in a band. After a brief period with The Rocking Trio, myself Jarrod and Cliff Marshall got together to form The Keytones. We started out as a rockabilly trio- however, we gradually developed a unique three part harmony and jive/swing style. After a number of different line ups we split in 1992.

In 1994 I played in a pop band called Ouch who were heavily influenced by The Beatles, the highlight being a tour of Japan, then a year later played with The Stargazers (a Bill Haley and the Comets Style band). Then, following the split of Jarrod's band Ronnie Scott?s Rejects, I joined forces with Jarrod, Niall Oates, and Roger Diamond to form Hullabaloo, which has now transformed into the current band featuring Shaun O'Keeffe and Ivan Thompson.

My main musical influence these days is the gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt who I discovered in my Keytones days. He played such melodic runs with ease, despite having only two fingers on his left hand. The music of Django, along with Les Paul, Jimmy Bryant and Barney Kessell, gave me the challenge I was looking for and still does today. My love of music and of playing the guitar is still stronger than ever, so I hope you enjoy listening to The Jazz Police as much as I love playing in it.
